Five minutes with a tape measure can prevent a bulky return and a poor travel setup. Record the numbers instead of relying on “fits most vehicles.”
What you need
Use a flexible tape measure, your vehicle manual and a phone photo of the empty rear seat. Set the front seats where they are normally used before measuring.
1. Usable bench width
Measure the flat seating surface between the door-side edges. Do not assume the door-to-door cabin width is the usable product width.
2. Seat depth and footwell span
Measure the bench from its back crease to front edge, then measure the open gap toward the front seats. A rigid panel needs appropriate support; captain-chair layouts can leave a center gap that some extenders are not designed to bridge.
3. Attachment points
Record front and rear headrest styles. Integrated headrests, unusual posts and powered-seat movement may affect strap routing.
4. Keep controls accessible
Locate seat-belt receptacles, child-seat anchors, vents, heated-seat instructions, door handles and window controls. A product should not block required access or contradict the vehicle manual.
5. Entry height and dog needs
A hard platform can increase the jump height. Consider the dog's size, age, mobility and health; assist where appropriate and seek qualified veterinary advice for individual concerns.
